Official Contest Rules

Enter The Annealer Magazine’s “In Time for the Holidays” Contest.  Winning entries will be published in the fourth issue of The Annealer Magazine.  The first in the new annual publication comprised entirely of self-representing artists.  Besides fame, winners will also receive exciting prizes donated by our sponsors (to be announced as received) and/or cash prizes.

What are you waiting for?  Get that torch out, turn on the kiln, pull out the beading supplies and enter now!

SUMMARY
Entrants are asked to submit a photograph of their design by midnight EST on April 30, 2009.  Send your photo to contest "at" The Annealer Magazine "dot" com. The editor of The Annealer Magazine will select the top 10 finalists in each of the categories (listed below). The finalists' will be notified and requested to submit their written instructions (tutorial), along with the finished entry and official entry form (click here) on or before May 30, 2009.  Failure to submit the written instructions for the entry will result in disqualification and forfeiture of any and all prizes.  The entries submitted by the top 10 finalists in each of the categories will then be posted on the Annealer Magazine’s website from June 15-20, 2009, and your peers will be given an opportunity to vote for their favorites (voting instructions to be provided at time of voting).  The top three entries in each category that receive the most votes will be named as first place, second place, and third place winners. The editor will choose one of the first-place winners from all categories as the grand-prize winner.   All top ten finalists will be notified of their final status via e-mail.  Winning designs and instructions will be published in The Annealer Magazine.  This is a special issue, the first "Annual" issue to be released in Fall, 2009 (just in time for the Holidays).

ELIGIBILITY
All designs must be handmade, new, original, and not currently available for sale, they must not have won any previous contests or be published anywhere else (including websites, blogs, etc).  Participants must create and complete the finished design on their own, without outside assistance.  The competition is open to adults over the age of 18.  Employees, vendors, agents of The Annealer Magazine, and The Annealer Magazine sponsors and related companies and their immediate families are not eligible.

CATEGORIES
The Holiday Contest consists of 5 categories; however, The Annealer Magazine reserves the right to add or delete a category subject to participation and sponsorship.  Participants may submit 1 design per category.  Categories include:

Lampworked Beads and Pendants: Designs created with a torch and glass (hard, soft, etc.).   Pendant must have glass bail or hole for hanging.  The use of press tools or molds is prohibited.

Ceramic Beads: Designs must be handmade and you must have made the bead yourself.  The use of press tools or molds is prohibited.

Jewelry Designs:  Designs created using at least one handmade (by a self-representing artist) lampwork, fused glass or ceramic focal bead.   If you do not make the bead(s) yourself, you must provide the name of the artist.

Precious Metals:  Designs created using at least 50% metal (i.e. silver or gold) sheet and/or wire or clay.  Metal can be mixed in your design, but must include at least one handmade lampwork or ceramic bead.  If you do not make the bead(s) yourself, you must provide the name of the artist.

Off Mandrel Glass Designs, Small Sculpture & Marbles:  Designs created with a torch and glass (hard, soft, etc.) without the use of mandrels.  The use of press tools or molds is prohibited with the exception of marble molds used for marble entries; and blow pipes (hollow mandrels) for blowing glass.

HOW TO SUBMIT
Designs must be e-mailed to contest@theAnnealermagazine.com and received by midnight EST on April 30, 2009.   PLEASE SEND ONE E-MAIL PER ENTRY. (If you are submitting five designs, send five e-mails, one for each design.) E-mails must include:
1.) your full name and contact information, including street address, phone number, and e-mail address.
2.) The title of your entry.
3.) The name of the category into which you are entering your design.
4.) No more than two photographs of your entry.  Make sure the entire project is clearly visible. The photograph file must be named the same as the entry’s title with your last name immediately following it.  Entries submitted with any other file name will not be accepted.

Submit high quality digital photographs.  Digital photographs must be at least 300 dpi, and must be at least 5” x 7”.  Please use the highest (best) photo setting your camera will take. TIF, BMP, JPG formats are acceptable.  We can adjust digital files to make them smaller, but cannot make them larger, therefore, please do not edit your photos.  Send us the original photo file from the camera.  If any modifications/adjustments need to be done, we will perform those adjustments.  Do not add watermarks or any text directly on the photo as they can not be used.

Keep in mind that finalists will be selected and winners will be chosen based on these photographs—it is to your advantage to submit the best possible images of your submission(s).

PHOTOGRAPHY RIGHTS
By submitting the photograph(s) to The Annealer Magazine, you are giving your assurance that the photograph(s) are available for use by The Annealer Magazine for all of the purposes described in these contest rules.  If someone other than you has taken the photograph(s) or controls the rights to the photograph(s), you are responsible for clearing these rights before submitting the photograph(s).  A copy of such clearance may be required.

EARLY BIRD PRIZE
Eligible entries received by midnight EST on January 30, 2009, will be entered into a random drawing.  The early bird winner will be drawn and notified on or before February 15, 2009.  Entrants will be entered into the Early Bird drawing for each eligible entry.  The winner will still be eligible to receive any of the other prizes awarded in this contest. Prize to be announced.  NOTE THAT THIS DEADLINE HAS NOT BEEN CHANGED.

WINNERS

A first-place, second-place, and third-place winner will be selected in each category. One grand-prize winner will be selected by the Editor from first-place winners from all categories.

Prizes will be awarded to the first-place, second-place, and third-place winners.  Prize descriptions will be posted on The Annealer Magazine website as they become available.

The grand prize consists of the winning entry on the front cover of the 2009 Getting Ready for the Holidays Issue as well as 1/2 page advertising space within the magazine.  Second, Third and all non-placing top ten winners will receive a minimum 1/3-1/4 page spot to showcase their entry along with promotion of the artist valued at a minimum of $225.00.  Each entry will receive a copy of Issue IV of The Annealer Magazine.  Other prize descriptions will be posted on The Annealer Magazine as they become available.  Only one grand prize is awarded.

All prizes will be awarded to eligible winners as described in these contest rules by publication release.  At the sole discretion of The Annealer Magazine, International winners (outside the USA) may be awarded prizes by way of paypal funds transfer (amount to be determined) instead of actual prize items.    

All top ten entrants of each category will be notified of their status via e-mail, and will have until 5:00 p.m. EST on May 30, 2009, to submit their actual project, plus a detailed materials list, tools list, and step by step instructions.  See Guidelines for submitting your entry  here.

The first-place, second-place, and third-place winners in each category and the grand-prize winning entry will be publicly announced in The Annealer Magazine Issue 4, scheduled for release in Fall 2009.  

GENERAL RULES
Entrants reserve the copyright in all entry materials subject to the rights granted to The Annealer Magazine under these contest rules.  However, the entry materials will not be returned to entrants (except as outlined in Guidelines for Winners), and The Annealer Magazine shall have no responsibility or liability for loss or damage to entry materials.

The Annealer Magazine disclaims any responsibility or liability due to the non-receipt of entries due to circumstances beyond its control, including but not limited to, late delivery or non-delivery due to defects in the operation of the Internet and/or the hardware and software used by the entrant or by The Annealer Magazine.

Top 10 in each qualifying category will be chosen for their originality, creativity, and quality by judge(s) selected by The Annealer Magazine from the editorial staff of The Annealer Magazine.  The top 3 finalist in each category will be chosen by your peers.  The grand prize winner will be chosen for its originality, creativity, and quality by the chief editor of The Annealer Magazine.  All decisions of the judge(s) shall be made in their sole and absolute discretion and will be final.

Winners in each category will be chosen on the basis of votes for each entry as received at The Annealer Magazine, www.TheAnnealerMagazine.com, during the voting period.  The Annealer Magazine cannot control, and disclaims any responsibility or liability, for online voting and is responsible only for using its best efforts to collect and count the votes actually received.

Entrants must satisfy all eligibility requirements before finalists and winners are selected, winning entries are published, and/or the grand prize is awarded.  If an entry is selected as a finalist or as a winner by the voting conducted at The Annealer Magazine website, or if an entry is selected as the grand-prize winner, but the entrant is not eligible, and/or if the entry does not conform to the contest rules, or if the entrant reveals to any person or persons which entry they submitted prior to the end of voting, or posts photos anywhere, including on their personal website, then the entrant and the entry will be disqualified and the next-ranked entrant will be selected.

A winner will be announced in each category as first place, second place, and third place.  Winners will be notified by e-mail at the email address provided by the entrant.  The winning entrants will be announced by name and city/state of residence in The Annealer Magazine.

In the event there are not enough entries in each category, The Annealer Magazine reserves the right to re-structure the contest and/or terminate the contest at its sole discretion. 

All personal information collected by The Annealer Magazine from entrants will be kept in confidence and used for purposes of judging only except that the name, likeness and city of residence of finalists and winners may be announced, advertised, promoted and publicized by The Annealer Magazine.

By entering The Annealer Magazine Contest competition, each entrant is granting to The Annealer Magazine the perpetual, exclusive, and royalty-free right to (a) use the photographs and other entry materials submitted by the entrant without photo credit(s) for the photographer(s) who took the photographs, (b) photograph and reproduce the entry in the print and electronic publications of The Annealer Magazine and the advertising, publicity, promotional and marketing materials of The Annealer Magazine in any and all media, and (c) use the name, image, likeness, and biographical data of the finalists and top ten winners in connection with all of the foregoing uses.

By entering The Annealer Magazine Holiday Contest competition, entrant is assuring The Annealer Magazine that entrant possesses the right to submit all entry materials for use by The Annealer Magazine as described in these contest rules without the consent or approval of any third party, and The Annealer Magazine is entitled on rely on entrant’s right to do so.  

The Annealer Magazine reserves the First Print Rights with respect to all articles, tutorials and photographs (hereafter collectively the "entry").   The Annealer Magazine has the right to publish the submitted entry in the written magazine to be distributed worldwide, and the right to publish within the magazine electronically on its website in secure pdf format before anyone else, including, but not limited to the writer/author/photographer.  Additionally, the writer/author/photographer may not sell or otherwise cause the submitted entry to be published elsewhere for a minimum of three (3) months after first printed issue appears.   By submitting your entry to The Annealer Magazine, you agree not to publish or cause to be published the submitted entry as outlined above.  You further acknowledge that the entry is original and you have full rights to submit the entry for publication and/or you have received written authorization from the writer, artist or photographer to submit the entry for publication, and by submitting the entry, you agree to hold The Annealer Magazine, it's agents, founder, editor, affiliates and/or assigns harmless, and release The Annealer Magazine to publish said entry, and to defend in the event of a lawsuit or other legal remedy against The Annealer Magazine.  By submitting your entry, you agree to the terms and conditions outlined herein.

As a condition of eligibility, the winning entrants may be required to sign and return an agreement in a form satisfactory to The Annealer Magazine by which each entrant formally consents to the use of his or her entry, photograph, name, image, likeness, and biographical data as described above.  If entrant is requested to sign a consent form and fails to sign and return the form by the date specified in the request, entrant will be disqualified.

The Annealer Magazine reserves the right to terminate this contest for any reason in its sole discretion.  All entries (submitted via regular mail) will be returned in such an event, no prizes will be awarded.

Entrants are solely responsible for payment of taxes or other fees that may be imposed by reason of the prizes awarded to them.

The contest is void where prohibited or restricted by law.
