"…I wanted to be able to make something that somebody might treasure many years from now."

Known as the Crossroads of America, Indianapolis, IN, is home to delectable dining, the famous Indianapolis 500 and our September Lampwork Babe, Janet Jones.  Along with a full time job, husband and three daughters, Janet speeds through her days so that she can finally pause and immerse herself in her lampworking hobby. No doubt Janet finds beading to be a great escape, saying that “as I am working a bead in the flame and trying to get just the right shape, it is almost as if I go into a trance or something . . . just watching the hot glass . . . it just intrigues me.”

Janet has been a beader since 2002, and in June of 2005, she “got bit by the bug” after a closer inspection of some of the beads that she bought.  At her local library she found the History of Beads and got the itch to want to “be able to make something that somebody might treasure many years from now."

After about 6 months of research, Janet finally stepped into a beading class.  All technicalities aside, today the focus lies in simply "getting the beads to be nice and round," she says with a grin.  Once that is accomplished, the signature bead will surely evolve!  Her growth is definitely evident; Janet recalls her first beads being “kind of wonky” in comparison to her most recent work.  Oh and one last thing, as many artists agree… there is definitely never enough hours in the day to accomplish the amount of beading one craves.  Although Janet’s beads aren’t yet for sale, she is nearing the point where her pieces are good enough to sell.

Janet’s studio is situated in her garage, and in the near future will consist of a shed that will be all her own.  Her tools of choice are Effetre/Moretti glass and a Hot Head torch.  There is a Nortel Minor torch, which has been waiting its turn to be hooked up and experimented with.  One day Janet hopes to meet Kim Neely and milk some good tips from her… simply because “she makes awesome beads!”

As Janet’s skills blossom we can expect to see more intricate beads.  Sculptured flowers are on her list and her interpretation of nature is sure to be a hit!  Keep an eye out for her upcoming website, many surprises are certain to turn up. A
