Re: Meet the Artists

Terry,
That is an awesome building. I want one! Is this to be your lampwork studio? Or jewelry? Or both? I have big plans in the works so I know how excited you must be.  Good luck and congrats!

Re: Meet the Artists

Thanks, Cher! We are very lucky to have gotten it. It's going to require lots of TLC but it will be worth it.

My plan is to have a studio/boutique in the front, with the main torching area in the front window. I picture having loose beads as well as finished jewelry for sale. As things progress, I hope to have classes (mostly beads but pretty much anything glass related) in the back. I also hope to host some bead retreats but that's a little way off.

Re: Meet the Artists

Cher,

I wish you good luck on your search! Keep us posted on what you get rolling. I love to see folks succeed, especially glassie folks! smile

I've dreamed of something like this for as long as I can remember. When things started falling into place it was almost scary...like it is meant to be and everything is happening for a reason. I'm sure there will be stumbling blocks but so far I couldn't ask for things to go any better. I *plan* to update the site at least weekly.

Have a wonderful day, everyone!

Re: Meet the Artists

Terry,

When I said that this forum was quiet I might have been exaggerating a bit, didn't realize it at the time, though, haha.  Dreams are what life

is made of for me anyway. I reach one goal and create another one or two. It is all great isn't it. I love your dream come true! There is an

old ice house in the town I reside that I have wanted to buy for years. It is huge empty but looks refurbished so it is millions. It is right on

US1. Maybe I will win the FL lotto tonight!

Re: Meet the Artists

It will probably take a while for folks to migrate this way but it's a cool place and is bound to grow!

An old ice house would be great! I've been down your way a lot so I'm trying to remember what's on the highway there. I used to do travel for NASA so I was in the Cocoa Beach area a lot and made it to Melbourne some. I really like that area a lot.

Someone has to win the lottery...might as well be you! smile      Or me! smile

Re: Meet the Artists

Hi Hot Glass buddies,

My name is Rae Grout and I have been milting glass since 2002. I started lampworking using a Minor torch and an old drafting chair I have had from years back. (In my former life I was a Process Engineer with a Chemical Engineering background) For this Valentines Bill (my wonderful DH) gave me a Lynx torch and a brand new drafting chair so I can create bigger, sculptural pieces of work. Two days later I was making a large pendant when the punty broke off. The red-hot pendant dropped from the flame, bounced off the table and between my legs. Yikesssss ~~ As I looked down flames shot up ~~~ I was able to wheel the chair back and grab the pendant and douse the chair with water that I keep on my bench. Luckily I salvaged the pendant and have black duct tape for my new chair. Bill bought me another Valentines gift, a welder’s apron to go with my other new toys. Now that’s love. Bill has been a hot glass artist since 1992, we work out of our glass studio in the Bitterroot Mountains of Montana.

This looks like a fun group of people and I look forward to meeting some new friends.
Thank you for putting up with my silly ramblings on.
Have a fun and wonderful day :-),
Rae

Re: Meet the Artists

Hi, Rae!

You jumped in there while I was writing my previous post. Nice to meet you! I've always wanted to visit your part of the country. What a scary experience with the broken punty! I never thought much about an apron until I took a marble making class. I think everyone in the class went "butt up" several times when their punties broke. I had purchased a red suede grilling apron on impulse on the way to the class and was very glad that I did!

I'll see you around the forum!

Re: Meet the Artists

Hi Terry,
Yup, I thought an apron would be too hot and confining, since I started making marbles and bigger hot glass things I really love my apron. Now I am fearless Hee Hee
My DH worked for Rocket Research in the Seattle area (I was a consultant for them). Bill had been sent to the NASA site in FL several times. It’s a small world but I would hate to have to paint it Hee He
Have a fun evening,

Re: Meet the Artists

Terry - the studio is really starting to look great.  I would love to give up my 9to5 and spend the rest of my working life doing something I love.

Cher - welcome and I just went to the bay and I love your beads.  I'd love to get you down to south Fla for our meeting on Sunday but Melbourne is quite a hike.

Sonshyne - welcome as well.  Obviously since everyone has traded in their day jobs it is something that is doable.  Of course my husband wants to get a big boat and live on it and we haven't figured out whose dream to follow since we are polar opposites.

Re: Meet the Artists

Well, here's the scary part...I'm still doing a 9-5, M-F. For a while, anyway. The studio is very close to work and my home so I can go there right after the paying job. That area isn't busy with shoppers during the day. Most folks do a quick lunch at one of the restaurants and leave.  I'm going to continue to work so that I can get the studio/shop fully stocked and decorated so that I'm not sweating things when I do get ready to torch full time. (Which I hope is much sooner than later!)

Re: Meet the Artists

Hi Rae, Hi Barb,
Barb, you are in Ft Lauderdale? Did I meet you at Habatat Gallery in the last few years? I am not sure if you are one in the same, hehe. You are close but yet so far especially with the traffic. Melbourne and Palm Bay are out of control. I do homecare so I do a lot of driving and I am ready to move to a slower paced state where they have southern accents like mine. Yeah, Tenn, or the Carolinas, in the woods.
I am getting ready to go part time on my 9 to 5. I cannot wait!
Rae, nice to meet you.

Is Habatat Gallery in Boca?  Yes, Florida has become a booming wall to wall people moving people and hurricanes.   I have a teaching studio in Fort Lauderale - River of Glass Studio - and am partners with Pam Dugger who teaches all over and works full time as a bead artists while I slave away to the clock making money I can't convince myself to give up.  If you ever find yourself traveling this way let me know.

Re: Meet the Artists

Help!

I want to string beads, necklaces and bracelets. I want to use my beads for the focal and then add crystals and or gems or whatever. What do you jewelers use and where do you make your purchases? I have the Fire Mountain catalogs but find it difficult to get my head around all those Swarovski and Czech beads. What do consumers want in jewelry designs. I have not one clue with this. One day I will take metalsmithing classes but until then I need some serious help.

Re: Meet the Artists

Cher,

I generally pick up "other" beads, stones and crystals at shows but inbetween I go to the bead shops.  I buy my softflex, stringing material, findings, crimps, etc. on line but I like putting my beads in little bags then walking around a show or shop matching them to other things.  Right now crystals are very "in" and Fire Mountain has a great selection at a fair price.

Re: Meet the Artists

Hey Barb,

When you make a necklace do you have a theme in mind a then buy the beads or do you have lots of beads and crystals to put it all together. Do you use gems stones?

Re: Meet the Artists

Hi Rae!  Welcome to the forum.  I'm pretty sure that I haven't left anyone out - in case I did - you are all welcome to the site, we're very  happy you joined us.

We've been relocating to NC from Florida, so the past week or so, although I've been here to check on things, I haven't really posted - Thanks to Barb, our wonderful moderator, the forum has kept going!!!  THANK YOU BARB!!!      I was just down there off of Griffin Barb, but just didn't have the time to stop in to say hello - I'm really sorry I didn't take a few extra days so I could have seen you while I was there.

Hey, you are all in for a treat next month.  We're going to have our first jewelry artist featured on the site.  And... wait til you all see what we have in store for the magazine.  I'm so excited!    I also noticed that we have well over 100 members in the Auction Boutique - almost 25 more over the past 3 days!  Looks like they are mostly buyers - so all you bead artists.... let's get some more beads listed and give them something to really drool over and stick around for!  :)

Re: Meet the Artists

Mi Marilyn,
Thank you for the warm welcome. I really like this dynamic interactive site. I have ordered the magazine and will have to stop making marbles long enough to crank out some beads to put in the Boutique. I have been making some jewelry using my DH’s beads and mine, but mostly sell those at our local artist market.
Have a fun day :-),
Rae

Re: Meet the Artists

We're glad you're here Rae.   Don't stop making marbles just yet.  We have a poll which is open until May 1st which will determine whether or not we add a "marble" category.  I can tell you that so far, the Yes' have it!   This particular poll may end sooner than May since it appears that the majority vote is a yes.

Re: Meet the Artists

Marilyn - I was just off Griffin Road yesterday - made a very bad choice of visiting a Stained Glass Studio.  I'm making a patio table I thought with tile but I think it will be all stained glass.  I'm taking a class in May but have to wait until after the Gathering to take the full 6 week glass.

Rae -  I usually have an idea of what I want the piece to look like but I have enough variety of beads and findings that I will put something together then if it doesn't move me I will take it apart and try something else.  The greatest things I found were the little springs that clamp on the end of your wire so you can play without hurting your stringing material.  I also do a lot of seed work with my pieces.  I use stones, crystals, store bought beads, spacers and my lampwork.  I love combining many textures.  And it is rare that I don't have silver somewhere in the piece - not a lot just a touch.

I'm working on a piece right now that is lime green and silver.  It will eventually have little off white and yellow flowers weaved into the piece with seed beads but I haven't finished the flowers yet so it's just sitting there waiting.

Re: Meet the Artists

Hi Vonna ~ Big white fuzzy (Sammy) hugs to ya. Its good to see you. I love your bracelets in the boutique.

Barb ~ Thank you for the great jewelry tips. I always love learning new tricks. I am really loving working with copper wirework right now. I have some peach glass that goes beautifully with it and love the way copper and peach enhance each other. I would have a hard time selling my jewelry because what I think is cool doesn’t meet the masses. My family appreciates the jewelry I make as gifts. Or so they say hee hee. When I sell my jewelry at the artiest market I can really get funky with my designs. The market is mostly college kids spending mom and dads money. You can tell the kids that are really out of control because they are the ones with credit cards that mom and dad pay the bills on.

Marilyn ~ Thank you for the info on a possible marble category. I would like to have my DH post here and marbles might be a great way to get him over here.

Happy Sunday to you all, hopefully I will spend the day in our garden. I need to get some seeds planted and play in the dirt a little.
Have a fun and wonderful day,
Rae
